It is part of the 'Flat Top' line of Corona portables. Corona made many of these pre-war portables, and they are an American classic. But this one is special - it has a collection of rare apothecary and pharmaceutical typeheads, including ℞ and ℥, meaning it was likely used by a medical professional or someone who worked in the distribution of materials used in medical recipes or prescriptions. \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThis Corona underwent significant disassembly, including removal of each typebar and a complete disassembly and rebuild of the escapement. A new platen was fitted to protect the typeslugs and provide better print quality. As a result, the typewriter works well, and all features work as intended, including a basket shift, shift lock, margins, margin release, tab, backspace, line space regulator, platen detente release, ribbon reverse, touch regulator and bell.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe original black gloss paint has been carefully cleaned, polished and waxed and is in very good shape. There are a few minor scratches, most noticeable being a couple grazes at the front left of the ribbon cover and a small one on the front right of the ribbon cover. There are a couple of small chips to the centre of the paper plate above the platen and some marks to the back of the typewriter from years of removing and returning the typewriter from its case.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAll nickel parts have been polished, including each of the keytops' metal key rings. Some of the key rings have lost some of their nickel plating, but most retain a silvery shine. The feed rollers have been cleaned with rubber rejuvinator and grip paper very well. It has been thoroughly cleaned, and its chrome parts have been polished to a shine. The latches shut as they should; however, the male parts no longer flip up as they used to because their internal springs are broken. This is not much of a problem and just means that when you unlatch the case, you have to lift the male parts of the latch up yourself. The original gloss paint shines beautifully, and the chrome-ringed keytops and return arm twinkle under lamplight. These elements of its design, the fine curves of its ribbon cover and segment, bring to any desk an air of Art Deco glamour and the era's refinement of design and technological progress.\n\nLet's talk about the special secretarial CASE that comes with this typewriter: it has been carefully and thoroughly cleaned and is in very good condition, bar a few age-related marks on the interior. The leather handle is in good shape and has been reconditioned with beeswax. The latches and fittings have been polished with metal polish and shine nicely. The latches open and close nicely, and both can be locked with the case's original keys, which are also included in this sale. \n\nThe case is broader and deeper than the default Good Companion Model 1 case and has a compartment beneath the typewriter's baseboard, where one can store stationary or accessories. The typewriter's baseboard has 2 half hinges on its left side that lock into their respective halves on the left side of the bottom half of the case. Once the halves of the hinges are aligned, two small rods are inserted to secure the hinges. With the hinges secured, the baseboard can be lifted to access the lower compartment. \n\nThe original black gloss paint has been carefully cleaned, polished and waxed with several layers of museum grade microcrystalline wax, giving it a deep shine. The paint on this Good Companion is in wonderful shape, and its mirror finish reflects light and surrounding objects beautifully. There are a few very minor and inconspicuous scratches to the black paint. The only noticeable flaws are some loss to the \"G\" in the \"The Good Companion\" decal on the front, and the missing \"M\" to the word \"Manufactured\" on the back. The other decals are in excellent condition and have retained their gold colouring and have also been carefully cleaned and preserved with a ph-neutral wax. (Being an early example, this Good Companion does not have a royal warrant on the front right corner of the ribbon cover.) \n\nPlease zoom in on the pictures for proper viewing, as they make up part of this typewriter's description. Please get in touch if you would like further pictures.\n\nAs mentioned, this Imperial Good Companion's platen has been professionally recovered with new rubber. With its new rubber, typing no longer has the sharp \"rap\" of typing on a rock-hard platen, and the print quality is very good. The feed rollers have also been recovered with new rubber and grip very nicely, allowing for easy feeding of new pieces of paper.\n\nEach of the keytops' metal key rings has been individually polished, as have all other chrome parts. The key rings and other chrome parts are in excellent condition. The glass of the keytops has been cleaned and is in very good condition. The original key legends themselves are in very fine condition with slight tanning to some legends.\n\nThe internal mechanisms have been thoroughly cleaned with an appropriate solvent. To ensure proper operation, this Imperial underwent a major disassembly of its segment and typebars. Each typebar was removed, cleaned and replaced once the segment and other mechanisms were clean. Suitable lubrication has been applied where necessary, and all mechanisms are fully functional and include margins, margin release, backspace, shift-lock, line space selector, line space detente, paper support, and a clear and great-sounding bell.\n\nAlso included is the typewriter's original brush, which has a mix of soft and hard brass bristles (the brush has been cleaned, but it is more of a collector's item as it seems to be losing a few of its softer black bristles each time it is used), and an original bottle of Imperial Typewriter Oil (again, this is more of a collector's item, as modern fine machine oil is a better - and less smellier - choice).\n\nThe typing action of Good Companions is solid and direct if also a bit raw in comparison to the refinements made in typewriters throughout the '40s and '50s. The experience is comparable to a Remington Portable Model 1, 2 or 3 of the same era, and a good typing technique of swift, punchy key strikes is necessary for consistent print quality. The glass keytops are comfortable, and their spacing is agreeable for typists with larger hands. There is no touch selector on this model of typewriter - I would describe its default typing pressure as \"medium\" with a slightly longer stroke. \n\nThis typewriter uses a carriage shift and types in pica at 10 cpi (characters per inch). The fawn paint on the aluminium shell is in excellent shape, with only a few inconspicous marks: a very small faded spot on the left side, and a couple of light marks above the keyboard. Otherwise, the original paint is wonderful condition. Having been cleaned and polished, the paint has been waxed with protective museum-grade wax and gleams. The silver paint of the carriage ends has some noticeable wear, commensurate with age and use. Please zoom in on the photos, as they make up part of the typewriter's description. If you would like more photos, please feel free to ask!\n\nAll nickel and chrome-plated pieces have been polished with metal polish and are in very good shape. The embossed \"Olivetti\" logo has received a careful metal polish and waxing and shines brilliantly. The plastic keytops are in excellent condition and have received a clean with plastic polish. The platen knobs have also been polished with plastic polish and are in very good shape.\n\nThis Scribe has been dismantled and the internal mechanisms have been cleaned with a suitable solvent. The escapement was completely dismantled, cleaned and adjusted to ensure a mechanical performance in line with the typewriter's lovely exterior. A light application of machine oil has been added where necessary. The original rubber grommets that help hold the fawn shell to the frame of the typewriter have been checked and are in great shape.\n\nThe platen and feed rollers have been cleaned with rubber rejuvinator - the platen has hardened with age as is the case with many vintage typewriters, and a backing sheet of paper should be used for best typing imprint. The feed rollers grip paper very well, and it is easy to insert new pieces of paper and carry on writing. The rubber feet, which are in very good shape, have also been cleaned and grip tabletops well. \n\nMechanically this Scribe is in fine form - the basket shift is light, and the silent carriage return is steady and smooth. The bell rings, margins work, and the touch control under the ribbon cover gently increases or decreases the pressure needed from fingers to type. The backspace, shift-lock, margin release, line space selector, tabulator and variable line spacing knob all work as intended. Please note, early versions of the Lettera 22, including this Scribe, were not designed with a carriage lock. This will not impact the careful shipment of this typewriter to you.\n\nAs mentioned, this Scribe comes with its original wooden case, which has been cleaned and is in good condition. Despite a good clean, there remain some age-related stains to the outer grey. The the inner lining does not exhibit the same type of staining, but there is a small tear in one corner of the lid. The chrome latch has been cleaned and polished and is in excellent, working condition. The original leather handle is in good condition and has been conditioned to extend its life.\n\nThis typewriter prints Pica typeface at 10 cpi (characters per inch) in black or red. For such a small typewriter, it has an impressively smooth carriage return, testament to its high-quality and well-designed internals, particularly its carriage rail system and stepping dog escapement. The well-machined metal internals are a bit of a juxtaposition against the light and flexible plastic shell in which they are housed. Indeed, the metal internals usually exhibit little to no age-related wear; however, the plastic shells often have bits of damage, especially at the two screw points where the shell meets the frame at the top corners of the keyboard. \n\nThis Tippa had such damage, and a repair has been made to the plastic shell using Araldite two-part epoxy (the same stuff they use to join carbon fibre parts on Lamborghinis!). I have stress tested the repair, and the plastic shell now stays firmly where it should. I have included a photo of this repair and am happy to send others upon request. The price of this script Tippa reflects the repaired part.\n\nThe plastic shell and ribbon cover have been carefully cleaned and polished with plastic polish, giving a nice gleam to the typewriter. There are yellow marks (likely the result of UV damage) on some of the plastic shell, particularly on the middle of the ribbon cover and around the edge that borders the segment. These imperfections are reflected in the typewriter's price. There is a very small scratch to the right of the 'A' on the 'Tippa' logo. Otherwise, there are some small, less conspicuous spots of the same yellowing here and there on the sides. Please zoom in on the photos, as they make up part of this typewriter's description. If you would like other photos, please let me know.\n\nThe metal paper plate and eraser table are in very nice condition and have been polished and waxed with microcrystalline wax. The eraser table's logo is in very good condition.\n\nThe chrome return arm and other chrome parts are in excellent condition and have been polished with metal polish. \n\nThe plastic keytops have each received an individual plastic polishing, as have the dark grey platen knobs. The keytops, platen knobs and other plastic lever tops are in very good condition. \n\nThe platen and rubber rollers have been cleaned and renewed with rubber rejuvinator. The platen is in good condition, with ample give for good print quality. The rubber rollers have retained their softness and grip and feed paper well. The rubber feet have hardened, and the typewriter dances a wee bit on smooth worksurfaces. This can be mitigated by using a rubber typewriting pad. \n\nAll mechanical features found on this typewriter are in working order and include a carriage shift, shift lock, margins, margin release, backspace, line space regulator, silent return, platen detente release and bell.\n\nThis Tippa comes with its original clam shell lid, which has been thoroughly cleaned and closes nicely. It has a few age-related marks on the outside but is in very good shape. There are, however, a few imperfections, including a couple of discoulorations left by stickers. One is on the right side of the typewriter, and the other is on the ribbon cover. Both are only conspicuous in brighter light. I have highlighted these imperfections in the 8th and 9th photos, respectively. The price reflects these marks to the paint. Beyond the two sticker marks are a couple of grazes to the left front corner of the typewriter and the left front corner of the ribbon cover as well as one or two small, dark spots on the left and right sides. \n\nThe \"Olympia\" logo on the ribbon cover is in great condition.\n\nThe dark green, slightly concave keytops are unmarked and glossy. Each keytop was removed and individually cleaned and polished. The green plastic platen knobs are in very good condition, with very minor scratches. \n\nAll chrome parts have been polished and are in good condition. The only imperfection is a small spot of wear to the chrome on the front end of the return arm. Please zoom in on the photos, as they make up part of the typewriter's description (if you would like to view additional photos, I am always happy to send them).\n\nAs mentioned above, the platen of this SM2 has been professionally recovered with new rubber, a great improvement to the old platen, which was as hard as plastic. The rubber feed rollers and rubber feet have been removed and cleaned with rubber rejuvinator. The rubber rollers are in great shape and feed paper into the typewriter without difficulty. The original rubber feet are in excellent shape and keep the typewriter planted to the writing surface.\n\nThis SM2 has undergone a significant disassembly for cleaning, including a disaassembly and rebuild of the escapement and segment. All internals have been thoroughly cleaned with appropriate solvent. Lubrication has been applied where necessary, and the 4 rubber washers between the typewriter's frame and metal casing, which often degrade over time in SM1 - SM4 models, have been replaced with new rubber washers. All features of this SM2 work as intended and include a silent return, margins, touch control (gently increases or decreases the pressure needed from fingers to type), backspace, shift-lock, margin release, line space selector, variable line spacing knob, extendable paper support, and a good-sounding bell.\n\nThe wooden case has been cleaned and is in good condition. There are some age-related marks and scratches to the exterior and interior. The chrome fixings and latch display some light surface wear, as some of the internal fixings, but all have been cleaned and polished with metal polish. The cleaned handle is sturdy, and the latch closes the case well. The clips on the interior of the case function well, latching the typewriter securely inside the case.\n\nThis typewriter uses a carriage shift and types in Italic No. 31 at 10 cpi (characters per inch). With its special and stylish \"holiday\" carrying case, you would be hard-pressed to find a better example of mid-century, American typewriter engineering and aesthetics. \n\nIn their heyday, 5-series Smith-Corona typewriters were one of the most popular typewriters in the USA. That popularity continues today, thanks not only to their attractive streamline moderne looks but also because of their quick and surprisingly light typing action. \n\nTo return this typewriter to its original snappy performance, it has been extensively disassembled and deep-cleaned. Appropriate lubricant has been applied where necessary, and all mechanisms work as intended, including a basket shift, shift lock, margins, margin release, backspace, line space regulator, platen detente release, ribbon reverse, touch regulator and bell.\n\nThe uncommon, original, seafoam green wrinkle paint is in very good condition. It has been carefully cleaned and looks great. It has some small scratches and light grazes on the front left and right corner; a thin scratch on the right corner of the ribbon cover; and a couple scratches on the right side toward the rear. These are pretty inconspicuous and do not detract from the presentation of the typewriter. There are also some scratches on the rear panel. The off-white plastic keytops are in excellent condition and have received a clean with plastic polish. The platen knobs have also been polished with plastic polish and are in very good shape. The righthand knob has a small mark at its centre.\n\nThe platen and feed rollers have been cleaned with rubber rejuvinator. Though it has hardened a bit, the platen is in good shape and its rubber retains a suitable amount of give. The feed rollers grip paper very well, and it is easy to insert new pieces of paper and carry on writing. The rubber feet, which are in superb shape, have also been cleaned and grip tabletops well. \n\nAs mentioned, this Clipper comes with its original \"holiday\" carrying case, which is in wonderful shape. Having been carefully cleaned, it looks very smart. Other than these grazes, there are two minor dimple-dents to the back left and right grey sections - quite inconspicuous \u0026amp; with no effect on the typewriter's functioning.\n\nThe plastic keytops are in excellent condition, and have been cleaned and polished with plastic polish. The green plastic platen knobs are in excellent condition and have also been polished with plastic polish.\n\nOn SF and Splendid typewriters, there is a piece of silver card used to cover the baseplate beneath the keyboard. This piece was in poor condition on this SF, so I removed it and installed a piece of white card drawn to the same measurements. You can see this change when looking through the keyboard.\n\nThis SF's internal mechanisms are of high quality, and the carriage return is smooth and steady. The chrome return arm is larger than those on many other ultra-portables, perhaps making it a better choice for those who struggle with small return arms. The typing action, very secure for an ultraportable, can be adjusted by a touch control lever, which makes slight adjustments to the tension required to depress keys. Good, punchy touch-typing is required for good, consistent print quality on an SF.\n\nThis typewriter has been disassembled and completely cleaned with an appropriate solvent, and lubrication has been applied where necessary. The internals are in great shape.\n\nThe platen is in very good shape and has a sufficient amount of give, unlike the hard platens found on many vintage and antique typewriters. The rubber rollers are in excellent condition and, along with the platen, have been cleaned and renewed with rubber rejuvinator. All mechanical features found on this typewriter are in working order and include carriage shift, shift lock, margins, margin release, backspace, line space regulator, colour selector, silent return, platen detente release, paper support and bell.\n\nThe \"Olympia\" decal on the ribbon cover is in good condition, but it has lost a little of its silver colouring. The foldable nickle-plated carriage return arm, quite a unique and smart design, is in good shape. The plastic platen knobs and keytops are in good condition, with the keytops having been removed from the machine and individually polished with plastic polish.\n\nThis Lettera 22 has been dismantled and the internal mechanics have been cleaned with a suitable solvent. The escapement of this Lettera 22 was completely dismantled, cleaned and adjusted to ensure a mechanical performance in line with the typewriter's lovely exterior. A light application of lubrication has been added where necessary.\n\nThe platen and feed rollers have been cleaned with rubber rejuvinator - the platen has hardened with age, as is the case with many vintage typewriters, and a backing sheet of paper can be used to soften the typing experience (although, the typebars of Lettera 22s strike pretty lightly to begin with). The feed rollers are in good, soft condition and grip paper well. As such, it is easy to insert new pieces of paper and carry on writing. The original rubber feet were in poor condition and so have been replaced with replicas made from new rubber cut and ground down to size (actually fabricated by Ian over at the Etsy shop 'TypewriterCellar' - I recommend stopping by his shop!). The replica feet grip tabletops well. \n\nMechanically this Lettera 22 is in fine form - the basket shift is light, and the silent carriage return is steady and smooth. The bell rings, margins work, and the touch control under the ribbon cover provides a slight increase or decrease in the pressure needed from fingers to type. The backspace, shift-lock, margin release, automatic ribbon reverse, line space selector and variable line spacing knob all work as intended. Note, there is no tabulator on this version of the Lettera 22.\n\nThe case is in acceptable condition and has been lightly cleaned. Its exterior is worn and has some marks, as shown in the photos. The zips both work, but there is a little bit of separation between the zippers and leatherette case on each back corner of the case. The inside of the case has also been lightly cleaned and blown out - there are some ink marks, particularly where the case hinges. The brown leather strap closes at its button, and the handles are in sturdy condition and can be used to carry the closed case. \n\nThis typewriter prints pica typeface in 12 cpi (characters per inch) in black or red. The latch closes, and, despite missing one of its chrome fixings, the handle is sturdy and can be used to carry the case. The chrome latch has been cleaned and polished to a shine.\n\nThe typing action of the Good Companion 4 is quite similar to that of its predecessors, including the Model 1, though maybe a bit 'tighter.' It is solid and direct if also a bit raw in comparison to the refinements made in some other typewriters in the '50s and '60s.
